Forex Leverage and Margin on MT5 for Traders in the UAE

By · 3 Nov 2026 · 8 min read

Leverage is the setting that lets a forex account control a larger position than the cash set aside for it. Margin is that cash, held by the platform while the position is open. MetaTrader 5 shows both. A class in Dubai moves faster when you can point at the margin line and say what it is.

This page is the reading of that line. What a pip is worth in dirhams is spreads, swaps, and pip value. How much of the account to risk on one idea is risk per trade. The two numbers answer different questions. Margin is what the platform holds. Risk is what you are willing to lose if the idea fails.

Where the numbers sit on MetaTrader 5

  1. Open the terminal and find the account leverage in the account details. It is written as a ratio, such as 1:100 or 1:500. That ratio is a property of the account, chosen with the broker. It describes how large a position the cash can control.
  2. Open one symbol, such as EURUSD. In the order window, type a volume. MT5 then shows a margin figure for that volume. That figure is the cash the position would set aside.
  3. If the account currency is AED, the margin line is in dirhams. If the account is in dollars, the line is in dollars. Read the currency label on the account. Do not convert it in your head on the first pass.
  4. The spread is a separate line, the gap between bid and ask. It is the cost of getting in and out. It is explained with pip value in the spreads article. Leave it there until the margin line is clear.

Install steps, if the platform is not on the machine yet, are in how to start forex trading in the UAE with MT5. Do the first readings on a demo account. What a demo hides, including the feeling of a live loss, is in demo versus live.

A labeled illustration, so the ratio has a size

Margin is the position's notional value divided by the leverage. If that notional is 10,000 in the account currency and the leverage is 1:100, the margin in this illustration is 100. The same notional at 1:500 sets aside 20, because a higher ratio holds back less cash for the same position. On many major pairs, 0.10 lot is the volume label for 10,000 units of the base currency. MT5 turns that volume into notional for your symbol and your account currency.

Use the paragraph to see the shape of the ratio. Then read the margin line in your own terminal out loud. The symbol, the contract size, and whether the account is in dirhams or dollars all sit inside the figure MT5 prints. If you cannot find the line, that is the question to bring to class.

A higher ratio sets aside less cash for the same position. It also means a small move is a larger percentage of the cash you did set aside. Beginners in the UAE often meet leverage as a badge on a broker page. In class it is treated as a size decision. The common mistakes note names oversized leverage as one of the patterns that drain new accounts.

What to have open before a class in Dubai

Practical sessions at Equity Fin Academy use StarTrader, regulated by the UAE Securities and Commodities Authority, on MetaTrader 5. The link is the academy's affiliate link. You open the account yourself. The course fee and the broker balance are separate. The leverage the broker offers on that account is the one you will read. The academy does not publish a house ratio on this page, because the figure in your terminal is the one the class can check.

  • A demo login, with one symbol on the chart.
  • The account leverage, read from the terminal, written down.
  • The margin MT5 shows for a small volume on that symbol, written down next to it.
  • One sentence on how much of the account you would be willing to lose if the idea fails. That sentence belongs with the risk article, and it can be rough.
